UK Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) Guidance

Overview

The Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) is an electronic document assigned by a licensed UK employer to a foreign worker. It is mandatory for applying for Skilled Worker and other sponsored visas.

Types of CoS

• Defined CoS: For overseas Skilled Worker visa applicants.
• Undefined CoS: For workers already in the UK (extensions, switches, dependents).

Key Information in a CoS

• Employer’s sponsorship licence details
• Job title, SOC code, and description
• Salary offered (must meet thresholds)
• Employment start and end date
• Unique CoS reference number

Employer Responsibilities

• Request and assign CoS correctly
• Ensure compliance with salary/job requirements
• Maintain HR records and reporting duties

Employee’s Role

• Use unique CoS number in Skilled Worker Visa application
• Ensure details match across application
• Apply within 3 months of CoS issue

Application Process

1. Employer holds valid sponsor licence
2. Employer requests CoS allocation
3. Assign CoS via Sponsor Management System
4. Worker receives CoS reference
5. Worker applies for visa

Costs & Validity

£199 per CoS (some categories lower). Immigration Skills Charge may also apply (£364–£1,000 per year). CoS must be used within 3 months.
